The Piémont Pyrénées 2023 Calendar records my 2022 Chemin de Compostelle across south France. My path headed west 700 kilometres from the bustling city of Montpellier along the GR78 and Roman roads, through vineyards, olive groves, and the Canal du Midi to Carcassonne. With the peaks of the Pyrénées ever present, through forests of beech, oak and chestnut, I passed Cathar and Templar sites reaching the modern-day pilgrim site of Lourdes. After 35 days of sun, mud, rain and sheep poo under my Salamon boots, I arrived at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port again with thirteen sketches for a calendar.
My 2018 whim of walking the Chemin de Compostelle has almost turned into a way of life. In 2022 I packed my Moleskine sketchbook, a slightly expanded stable of Faber Castell aquarelle pencils and a few more Copic art pens, two tiny brushes, and the lid off a water bottle, to head off on a road 'Somewhere in France.'
Featuring sketches from the cities and towns of Montpellier, Fabrègues, Gigean, Rieux-Minervois, Carcassonne, Mirepoix, Audressein, Arudy, L'Hopital Saint Blaise, Valcabrère and Portet-d'Aspet.
