Benefits of learning cello

Most people don’t need to be convinced of the many benefits of learning a musical instrument. However, for those who need the backing of science, numerous studies have been done to assess the affects of music on cognitive function, memory, social skills, organisational skills and general health. I’ll let you do your own research.

I just know for myself, that learning the cello as a child (I started at age 10), gave me a sense of achievement, organisation, a social network and an enduring love of classical music. In these days of digital-everything, the simplicity and real nature of learning a physical skill is more important than ever, to assist children to develop naturally and meet their gross and fine motor, communication, and self-regulation skill milestones.

Children are naturally musical, and when nurtured in a positive, fun and consistent environment, will be playing beautiful, recognisable music with great feeling in no time. The benefits to the parent/child relationship, of consistently working on a physical skill together is immeasurable. Being part of the teaching triangle is the most rewarding aspect of cello teaching for me.

I have found the Suzuki method to be the most comprehensive, step-by-step approach to setting up young children for a life of music making, and it is an honour to teach in this way.
